Outgoing mail only via the central mail relay

As there are ever more problems with spam and viruses spread by e-mail from computers connected to the university network, an extra protection has been introduced on May 1st, 2005.

This protection implies that the connection to an external e-mail server (port 25) is only permitted from a central, i.e. managed by DICT, e-mail server smtprelay.UGent.be (adjustment at router level) In this manner we can avoid all kinds of junk being sent into the world and we can prevent UGent from being put on a blacklist. The latter would involve a lot of problems for all UGent users.

Concretely, this means that servers of a faculty, laboratory or department can no longer send e-mails, unless via the central mail relay smtprelay.UGent.be.

With regard to personal computers, this does not pose any problems, the outgoing mail server remains smtp.UGent.be. Virus or spam messages that are being sent by infected or hacked personal computers, will be stopped.
